Okay, I’m kidding.  Sort of.  My point is that this is going to be a challenging year of great drama on this planet, no matter what, and we all need to be present and take responsibility.

What form should that take?  It’s up to you.  (It always is.)

I tend to feel a sense of fatigue, frustration and even dread at the beginning of a new year.  This time, I’m feeling much more positive and energized, despite the draining effects of the GOP primaries, the NDAA, and other political developments and lack of developments.  Maybe it’s because I haven’t been deathly ill, as I’ve been through so many Christmas breaks, but I think it’s more likely due to inspiration from the populist uprisings here and around the world.

I’m not a very useful activist.  I wear out quickly, I don’t shout all that effectively, and I’m uncomfortable carrying a sign or being conspicuous.  Mostly I just write letters to the editor and posts here.  But I did go along on the New Year’s Revolution march in Albuquerque last Friday.

It was a beautiful day, and there were about 150 of us from a range of organizations including Occupy and (un)Occupy*, some socialist groups, and Southwest Organizing Project.  Turnout was small considering the number invited, but there were also a good many people who hadn’t participated in this sort of thing before.  Everything went pretty smoothly.  When those at the front of the pack started out in the street on Central, though, the cops were there instantly.  I mean within seconds.  From an SUV, they blared out orders to get back on the sidewalk.  Frankly, this seems reasonable to me– marchers can be just as loud on the sidewalk, and then nobody gets hit and we don’t antagonize the population.  I do understand the point of being as unignorable as possible, but still.  A little while later, the megaphone in the police car yelled, “THANK YOU FOR STAYING ON THE SIDEWALK!”  “You’re welcome!” some of us shouted back.

Speeches were made at various stops along the way.  One stop was the post office, an institution that can’t be saved in its present form, I fear.  Some guards eyed us warily from the front of the building, along with someone from Homeland Security, while some city police officers hung around behind us.  The Homeland Security guy took our picture– because, you know, we were SO threatening.  Some of us returned the favor:

I’m told by someone closer to the front lines (and who made it through the whole long march, which I did not) that the post office was the place where the protesters got the most pushback from authority figures, even though the demonstration was in support of the postal service workers and had a positive tone, unlike some of the speeches at other stops where marchers were against something.

I was dismayed by the clueless comments some readers of the KOB story made, and allowed myself to reply.  The folks who say “Get a job!” are so far out of it it that I hardly know how to speak usefully to them.  What I found positively painful, though, was the guy who said– and I’ve heard this kind of thing before– that it was pathetic for all those people to spend their time walking down a street when they could have been doing something useful for society.  I don’t know, honestly, that marching accomplishes a lot in itself, but being visible is crucial, for reasons I outlined in my last couple of posts on the movement.  Being visible may bring hope to a lot of people who have been mired in apathy or frustration.

There has been talk lately about what percentage of a population constitutes a tipping point.  Apparently it’s somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 percent.  Then ideas and movements take on a life of their own.  To get anything to really happen, to save ourselves in this time of environmental mayhem and political and economic stagnation, we need to tip over that point soon.  Swami Beyondananda says that we need “100% of the 99%, and 99% of the 1%.”  That may be a little beyond reach, but it’s worth striving to communicate with as many of the folks as we can.  “We” meaning anyone who is trying to improve our collective situation.

That may include talking with people who appear to have a completely opposite agenda.  A few weeks ago, Leslie Linthicum wrote in her Albuquerque Journal column about some comparisons and contrasts between Occupy and the Tea Party.  Her point was one I consider painfully obvious but that hasn’t been mentioned much in the mainstream media– that Occupiers have often been roughed up by the same police that left Tea Party demonstrations alone.  She got quite a few responses, a number of which were printed in the next Sunday’s Journal.  (I wrote to her myself, but only to her individually.)  Some of the letters showed such ignorance of the facts that I am going to discuss them below, in the hope of dispelling some myths.  I’m assuming that it’s all right to quote the letter writers, since they had already submitted their work for public consumption.

Al Groff wrote:  “Tea partiers respect and support police officers and leave event sites cleaner than they were before their events.”  Occupy groups have organized waste management brigades and have also assiduously cleaned their sites.  They have not been remotely “crapping in the street.”  As for Mr. Groff’s contention that “the occupy movement is well funded,” good grief, last I heard, the Albuquerque groups weren’t even taking donations.  He says that “it will only get more violent”– but it isn’t violent to begin with.  Nonviolence is a core value of the movement, and the Albuquerque group has been steadfastly nonviolent.

Robert L. Brien wrote:  “She states that the police have beaten the snot out of the occupy people.  When and where?!”  Mr. Brien, haven’t you seen the videos from New York City?

Milton E. Schroeder wrote:  “Don’t break the law and you won’t be ‘walloped,’ as Linthicum states.”  Now, how does that apply to the many journalists, including those from major media outlets like the New York Times, who have been wrestled to the ground, hit, and had their press credentials torn from their necks, for simply and peacefully trying to do their jobs?  Here in Albuquerque the relations between cops and protesters have been largely very good, with both sides being cordial to each other.  I have seen cops here act positively friendly and kind.  To the best of my knowledge, this reflects not only the fact that those individual cops are decent human beings, but that some community groups had already worked to establish a working relationship with the police overall.  We have benefitted from good planning and good will.  This has simply not been true everywhere.  Some individual cops, like one notable case in New York, have been out there on the street despite a history of abusing citizens.  Some have been poorly trained at dealing with situations like this.  Some police chiefs have given inappropriate orders.  One way or the other, it’s not acceptable to beat up on peaceful citizens exercising their right to free speech.  Period.
[On the day of the last march, I noticed a headline that read “115 N.M. Officers on Possible Sanctions List.”  Sigh.  Many of these officers were taken to task for issues that had nothing to do with mistreatment of citizens, though.]

Al V. Puglisi wrote that “liberals are far more wealthy than conservatives.”  Boy, I wish he’d included a source for that contention, because it sure isn’t true among people I know.  He then stated:  “OWS has ben facilitated not by homemade signs but by iPods, iPhones, and laptops used by spoiled youths in designer jeans.”  “Spoiled youths?”  OK, first, the “youth” aspect.  Looking at Occupy and allied activities here, I’ve seen a good many grey heads.  I myself am a middle-aged sole proprietor of a business, and I am very much in support of this movement.  At one meeting of a group with similar goals, I was one of only about four people under 60.  Are we “spoiled,” then, if not necessarily young?  Well, my daughter, who I think is pretty typical, has been commuting over an hour each way to work at a food-service job (she could not find one in town) while going to UNM full-time until her graduation a couple of weeks ago.  Many college-agers who are involved are working at jobs with low pay, no benefits, no potential, and pretty much no chance of ever reaching the middle-class security their parents and grandparents once enjoyed.  And then there are the student loans to pay back.  Yet, they are aware of being privileged and better off than so many Americans.  There is a saying, “Check your privilege.”  That’s in at least two senses, “check it at the door” and “check yourself” for unwarranted assumptions.  Some Occupiers in Albuquerque are working on useful projects like getting food directly to people who need it.  They’re so “spoiled” that they spend a lot of their time thinking about others who are less fortunate.

*For the sake of simplicity, speaking of those here in Albuquerque, I’m writing “Occupy” instead of “Occupy and (un)Occupy.”  I understand why (un)Occupy uses that name, but I think the idea of occupying our own country and our own public spaces does make sense, and can still be used by the indigenous people who were occupied to begin with.  Perhaps (re)Occupy?

[11/15/11  Since I wrote this, we’ve had an intense couple of days of protesters being arrested in cities around the country.   In New York City, members of the press were prevented from reporting on the fray, and some were even roughed up and/or arrested themselves.  It ain’t easy taking action at the moment, at least this kind of action.  But if you mess with reporters, they immediately go off and report on it.  There is pushback from the protesters and at least one judge, too.  Interesting times.  Stay tuned.]

Recently I found myself in the midst of a controversy between some friends about how best to respond to all the evils in the world.  One side held that God has everything under control and everything is already perfect, and all we need is to realize that– we don’t need to do anything.  The other felt that we should be doing everything we can with our own thoughts and intentions to make positive change.  I often find myself focused on actions in the physical realm, despite my spiritual bent.  What path should we choose among those options?

I’ve touched on these issues in my previous posts “How I Know the Material World Isn’t” and “Everything is OK. No, Really.”  I know that the “real” world of matter is largely (if not entirely) illusory and that what is actually going on is behind or beneath what we normally perceive.  That’s been more than adequately proven to me.  Everything is ultimately in the mind, or rather, in Mind, which is fundamental.  Yet, the suffering that exists here on the Earth plane is real indeed, and by failing to act appropriately, we may contribute to that suffering.  We are here on this planet for some reason; this reality cannot be completely unimportant or irrelevant.  Even if Earth is only a school, as is so often said, it behooves us to do well in our classes.

Regarding the issue of God having everything in hand, I always come back to the saying, “The Lord helps those who help themselves.”  Again, I don’t see a point in our being in this world if we do not take any action.

Some people’s version of taking action is to pray and meditate unceasingly, in a monastic setting or otherwise.  I can’t argue with that, and it seems quite possible that their mental energy is providing some kind of fuel or support for the rest of us.  Still, I’m not sure why one would want to waste the opportunity of living and acting in this world, during the brief span that one spends here in each lifetime.  There is plenty of time for contemplation outside of Earth life, isn’t there?

A couple of people wiser than I have helped me begin to find my way through these questions.  One was my daughter, Lenore, who pointed out that when people take visible actions, as she has with the Occupy movement, that provides an example of what can be accomplished, and gives our intentions a focus.  If nothing public was done, those ideas might never appear in other people’s minds for their thoughts to work with.

The other smart apple was someone a bit more remote.  As I was beginning to outline this post, I received an e-mail about a new book by Michael Cocks, an Anglican clergyman in New Zealand.  During the 1970s, Rev. Cocks was part of a group that received communications from an entity who claimed to be St. Stephen the Martyr.  Stephen’s eloquent teachings happened to touch directly upon the paradox I was trying to write about:

“We have talked of self-determination, perfection and of the acceptance of all things as they are.  It could be interpreted, were we not careful, that on one hand we may have foolhardy activity and, upon the other, negligent apathy.  We should follow the middle path and that is the acceptance of our experience and what we ask for in our prayers.”

Without claiming to be personally in control of the world, we can take responsibility for the part we play in it.  To say that we are the 100% (which I wish I’d thought of myself!) is not to excuse wrongdoers or to blame victims, but to recognize that we are all cells in the body politic, neurons in the brain of all humanity, and we have all had a hand in the creation of the present reality.  When we take responsibility, we take back our power.

I’m impressed with St. Stephen, but the person I’m choosing as my main guide through the current “shift hitting the fan” is Swami Beyondananda, who recommends that we all gather under one big intent for a general upwising.  I’ll be there.

Notes on Occupy

"What have YOU done TODAY for the movement?" seems like a good question to ask oneself in any number of contexts.


I’ve found myself writing to the Albuquerque Journal a number of times lately.  They’ve published my letters quite a few times in the past, but I don’t think these have made it into print.  It occurred to me that, hey, I have a blog.  This will be a little introduction to what I hope to say about the Occupy movement and what the spiritually aware person might choose to think or do about what’s wrong with our world.  

The Journal‘s coverage of (un)Occupy Burque has not been a model of accuracy for the most part, but right now I do want to encourage them, and for once, in today’s letter, I’m not yelling at them.


Thank you for today’s coverage of Albuquerque’s (un)Occupy activities.  The front-page picture of the march that took place yesterday as part of the Funeral for Our First-Amendment Rights did a great job of showing the positive, hopeful atmosphere, and Olivier Uyttebrouck’s article was clear and useful.

Our Albuquerque experience yesterday was certainly a contrast with that of Denver and so many other places, and with the eviction from Yale Park last Tuesday.  The APD officers who accompanied us on bicycles were pleasant and friendly, and they were a big help in directing traffic so that both marchers and cars could get through the intersections.

Citizens on the street, in businesses, and in cars were mostly enthusiastic and supportive.  There was one especially clueless young man in an SUV, though, who yelled, “Get a job and invest your money!”  Yes, both of those things have been working out great for Americans lately, haven’t they.  (And many of the marchers were students juggling both school and work, and bothering to give volunteer time as well.)  It’s too bad he didn’t follow us to Civic Plaza, where a gigantic banner proclaimed, “Americans Want to WORK!”

I feel compelled to respond to Ned Cantwell’s amusing but largely clueless column of 10/23 with the headline “Be Sure To Wear Flowers in Your Hair.”

Mr. Cantwell writes, “I am not sure why the banks are the centerpiece of frustration.”  Duh– because they had such a central role in wrecking the world economy.  “If you don’t like Bank of America’s $5 debit card charge, don’t use that service.”  I hardly know where to start with that one.  At the very least, it’s a kick in the pants to all of us taxpayers who kindly saved the banks’ own behinds, then watched their top executives skim off as much of our cash as they could.

“Banks make money?  We can only hope so.”  I don’t think anyone is complaining about banks or any other businesses making money ethically.  We are complaining that many corporations have made money, tons of it, by squeezing American workers dry and/or shipping their jobs to Asia.  We aren’t too thrilled with banks that profit hugely on shady mortgage deals, often heartlessly and mindlessly foreclosing on families who are actually making payments and doing their good-faith best to keep their homes.

“Nothing has changed much since hippies roamed the land.  There have always been the rich and the poor.”  Mr. Cantwell needs to look up a few statistics.  There was a period of time in which America had a genuine middle class.  That middle class, and in fact most of our citizens, have been steadily falling behind for decades now.  This is a matter of hard numbers.  The difference is more than just hope, which seems to be the only thing Mr. Cantwell thinks we have lost.  Objectively, things are worse for a great many people, and they were already getting worse before this latest economic meltdown hit us.  (Even though nowadays we have new toys like Mr. Cantwell’s nemesis Netflix.)  America was not supposed to be just another place where the rich got richer and the poor got poorer, was it?

The Tea Party focused on the role of government in creating the present mess.  The Occupy movement is focusing on big business.  Most people who pay any attention realize that it’s government being owned by big business that’s the real issue.  This is far, far more than some kids with guitars hanging out in parks, folks.  This is about deep, fundamental changes that we desperately need.  Take a look at the subjects of some of the past week’s teach-in lectures held by our local movement at UNM:

“Our Constitutional Republic: The need to get our money and sovereignty back under control”

“The need for deep electoral reforms at all levels”

“Beyond Corporate Health Care: the Single Payer Alternative”

“Globalization, corporate governance and causes of world financial crisis”

And most ironically, in light of Mr. Cantwell’s column:

I appreciated Diane Dimond’s Saturday column about US citizens being arrested simply for taking pictures.  The case of the woman who was put in jail for taking photos of a public display of helicopters to use on her “Support Our Troops” website was particularly horrifying.  We have allowed the development of a police state in which, rather than having greater “security,” we are all more at risk than ever from the very people we have hired to protect us.  Video and photos may be our only line of defense, yet we are punished for trying to use them.

The past few days’ events at the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City– which have received amazingly little media coverage– have made this all the more obvious.  Peaceful protesters have been sprayed in the face with pepper spray from only a foot away, dragged across the concrete by their hair, handcuffed so tightly that their hands have gone numb, and packed into police vans with their pleas for air and water refused.  Americans have cheered on the uprisings in Egypt and elsewhere, but we mistreat our own citizens who attempt to bring attention to injustices here at home.  If video coverage by those on the scene were not available, we wouldn’t even know this was happening, and we might not be willing to believe that it could happen here.

If police are doing right, videos will protect them from unjust charges against them.  If they are doing wrong, we, their employers, need to know about it.  Cameras on police cars are a great idea; whatever happens will be clearly seen, with no argument about who did what.  There is no reason whatsoever that citizens should not be able to use the same tool.

So much effort these days goes toward so-called security measures that accomplish little or nothing while invading our privacy, annoying us, and costing money.  A small example:  I was astonished to find that purses were required to be opened for the eyes of security guards at the gate of the State Fair this year.  Even after 9/11, that wasn’t done– what’s different now?  I was carrying only a 4 x 6” passport case, not even a purse, but I had to open it and show the guard.  Exactly what dangerous item could I have been carrying in that little case?  If a weapon of some kind could fit in there, couldn’t I have had one in a pocket or somewhere else on my person?  (An underwear bomb, perhaps?)  Going through bags without adding even more invasive searches is essentially useless, and what would more invasive searches do to the atmosphere of the fair?  The week before, the same guards had even been confiscating water brought by fairgoers.  Why?  So that more wasteful, trash-generating bottles of water could be sold at $3.50 apiece by fair vendors?  So that more attendees would be uncomfortable in the heat?  Can’t we use the security guards to actually patrol the fair and look for trouble?
